Saint Florido of Città di Castello, also known as Florencio or Fiorenzo, was born in the year 520 in Tiferno Tiber, which is now known as Città di Castello, Italy. Unfortunately, Florido was orphaned at a young age, but despite this difficult beginning, he showed great intellectual promise and a strong desire for education. He embarked on a path of studying literature and theology and dedicated himself to deepening his understanding of the Catholic faith. Through his unwavering commitment and scholarly pursuits, Florido's dedication caught the attention of the ecclesiastical authorities. Impressed by his knowledge and piety, he was ordained as a deacon around the year 542. However, Florido's life took an unexpected turn when his city, Città di Castello, was invaded and overtaken by troops under the leadership of Totila. In order to escape the turmoil and protect their lives, Florido and another Saint named Amanzio fled to the countryside of Perugia, Italy. The two exiled saints sought refuge and safety in Perugia. It was during this time that Florido's faith and spiritual prowess became evident to the local bishop. Recognizing Florido's exceptional qualities, the bishop ordained him as a priest. Florido's spiritual gifts were further demonstrated when he miraculously healed a man afflicted with madness in Pantalla, Italy in the year 544. After more than nine years of exile, Florido and the other exiles were finally able to return to their beloved Città di Castello, which had been ravaged and destroyed during their absence. The task of rebuilding the city fell upon their shoulders, and they embraced this challenge with great determination and resilience. Florido's exemplary leadership and unwavering faith caught the attention of Pope Pelagius II. Recognizing his virtues, the pope appointed Florido as the bishop of Città di Castello. This appointment marked the beginning of an illustrious and impactful tenure that would last for over three decades. During his time as bishop, Florido worked tirelessly to rebuild the diocese of Città di Castello, both physically and spiritually. He restored churches, reestablished religious traditions, and nurtured the faith of his flock. Florido's holy life and adherence to correct doctrine were so admired that even Pope Saint Gregory the Great, a close friend, took note and wrote about him in his writings. Saint Florido of Città di Castello passed away on November 13, 599, in Pieve de 'Saddi, Italy, at the age of 79. He died of natural causes, having dedicated his entire life to the service of God and his people. Recognizing his sanctity and the impact he had on the faithful, Saint Florido was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church, although the details of the exact canonization process are not recorded. Today, Saint Florido is revered as the patron saint of Città di Castello, both the city and the diocese. He is remembered for his strong faith, his resilience in the face of adversity, and his tireless dedication to rebuilding and nurturing the spiritual life of his community. The feast day of Saint Florido of Città di Castello is celebrated on November 13th, a day to honor his memory and seek his intercession.
