Biography

Saint Fiolanus of Lucca, also known as Saint Féolan or Saint Fidélis, was a revered early Christian figure and bishop. Born in Lucca, Italy, his exact birth date is unknown. Fiolanus is primarily remembered for his incredible journey alongside Saint Ursula and the Ursuline Virgins, as well as his eventual martyrdom in Cologne, Germany. Little is known about Fiolanus' early life and education, but he found himself called to serve the Church as a bishop. His reputation for piety, wisdom, and zeal for spreading the Christian faith quickly grew, garnering him the respect and admiration of his community. In the late 3rd century, Fiolanus joined Saint Ursula, a British princess, and a group of 11,000 virgins on a pilgrimage to Rome. They embarked on this journey to deepen their faith, seeking a papal blessing from Pope Saint Cyriacus. The city was under attack by the Huns, who violently martyred Fiolanus and his fellow Christians on October 21, 238.
