Saint Fidelis of Como

Biography

Saint Fidelis of Como was a Christian soldier in the imperial Roman army during the 4th century. He is believed to have been martyred during the persecutions of Maximian Herculeus. Not much is known about his early life or family background.

Saint Fidelis was a devout follower of Jesus Christ and remained steadfast in his faith, even while serving in the military. He was known for his strong character, courage, and dedication to his Christian beliefs. Despite the risks involved, he openly professed his faith and refused to worship the Roman gods.

During the reign of Maximian Herculeus, who was known for his brutal persecution of Christians, Saint Fidelis faced immense pressure to renounce his Christian faith. However, he remained firm and resolute in his conviction, even in the face of severe torture and threats to his life.

In the year 304, Saint Fidelis was ultimately martyred for his refusal to renounce his Christian beliefs. The exact circumstances of his death are unclear, but it is believed that he endured cruel and torturous methods of execution.

Following his martyrdom, the relics of Saint Fidelis were venerated in both Como and Milan, Italy. His remains continue to be venerated to this day, serving as a reminder of his unwavering faith and dedication to Christ.

Saint Fidelis of Como is honored as a patron saint in Italy, particularly in the towns of Arona, Castelnuovo Magra, Mello, Palazzolo sull'Oglio, and Plesio. These communities hold him in high esteem and seek his intercession in matters of faith, protection, and courage.

While Saint Fidelis has not been formally canonized by the Catholic Church, he is recognized as a saint in the pre-congregation period. His feast days are celebrated on October 28th and 29th (in the Diocese of Como, Italy) and on March 13th (in commemoration of the translation of his relics in Arona, Italy).
