Feast Day: March 26
Saint Eutychius of Alexandria, also known as Eutichio, was a sub-deacon in Alexandria, Egypt during the 4th century. He is best remembered for his unwavering support for Saint Athanasius of Alexandria and his opposition to Arianism, a heretical movement that denied the divinity of Jesus Christ. Not much is known about Eutychius's early life or family background. He lived during a time when the Arian controversy was ravaging the Christian Church. Arius, an influential priest from Alexandria, propagated the belief that Jesus was not fully divine but rather a created being. This teaching gained a following and caused a great deal of conflict within the Church. Eutychius was one of the Christians in Alexandria who firmly stood by Athanasius, the staunch defender of the orthodox Christian faith. Despite facing persecution and opposition from both local authorities and supporters of Arianism, Eutychius and his fellow believers remained steadfast in their commitment to the true teachings of Christianity. As Eutychius continued to oppose the Arian heresy, his activities caught the attention of those in power who were sympathetic to the Arians. Consequently, he was arrested, subjected to severe scourging, and unjustly condemned to slavery in the mines. The mines were notorious for their harsh conditions, often leading to the early death of those sentenced to labor there. During his journey to the mines in Egypt in 356, Eutychius, weakened by the abuse and exhaustion, succumbed to his suffering and died as a martyr. His untimely death marked the end of his earthly journey, but his unwavering faith and commitment to orthodoxy have continued to resonate throughout history. Saint Eutychius of Alexandria, despite not being widely represented in visual art, is venerated as a true martyr within the Catholic Church. He was canonized before the establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, also known as Pre-Congregation. His feast day is celebrated on March 26th, which commemorates the day of his passing. Though not associated with any specific patronage, the life and example of Saint Eutychius serve as an inspiration for all Christians to remain steadfast in their faith, regardless of the opposition they may face. Saint Eutychius of Alexandria stands as a remarkable figure in Church history, a fervent defender of orthodox Christianity during a time of great turmoil. His courage and unwavering commitment to truth continue to inspire and guide believers in their own spiritual journeys.
