Biography

Saint Euplus of Catania, also known as Euplio, Euplius, or Euplo, was a Deacon who lived during the time of the Roman Empire. He is recognized as a martyr and saint in the Catholic faith. Saint Euplus was born in Catania, Sicily, Italy, during the 3rd century. Little is known about his early life, but he dedicated himself to the service of God and became a deacon in the local Christian community. During the reign of Emperor Diocletian, a severe persecution of Christians began. Governor Calvisianus, who was known for his hostility towards Christians, ordered the arrest of Saint Euplus for the crime of possessing a copy of the Gospels. Upon his arrest, his copy of the Scripture was confiscated. Saint Euplus was brought to court and interrogated. He was asked if he possessed any other copies of the Gospels. In a remarkable act of faith and courage, he began to recite the sacred texts from memory. His recitation not only demonstrated his deep knowledge and love for the Word of God but also highlighted the lengths to which he and other Christians had gone to preserve and cherish the Scriptures during a time of intense persecution. Governor Calvisianus, enraged by Saint Euplus' defiance, ordered him to be tortured. He endured various forms of torture, including flogging, in an attempt to make him renounce his faith. However, Saint Euplus remained steadfast in his devotion to God, refusing to renounce his beliefs. On August 12, 304, Saint Euplus was martyred by being flogged to death in Catania, Sicily. His martyrdom became a testament to the strength of his faith and inspired many others in their commitment to Christianity. After his death, Saint Euplus' relics were kept and venerated in Trevico, Italy. For a long time, they were believed to belong solely to him. However, in 2005, a scientific examination revealed that the relics consisted of remains from three different individuals. Despite this discovery, Saint Euplus continues to be honored as a beloved saint with his feast day celebrated on August 12th. Saint Euplus is revered as a patron saint of Catania, Sicily, Italy, where he lived and died. He is also recognized as the patron saint of Francavilla di Sicilia, Italy, and Trevico, Italy. Throughout the years, many faithful have sought his intercession and protection in times of need. As a martyr who demonstrated unwavering faith and love for the Word of God, Saint Euplus serves as an inspiration for all believers. His courageous witness to the Gospel during a time of persecution serves as a reminder of the enduring strength and power of faith in the face of adversity.
