Saint Eric of Sweden

Feast Day: May 18

Death: May 1, 18
Saint Eric of Sweden, also known as Henry of Sweden, Eric The Lawgiver, Eric IX, and Erico IX, was born in the 12th century in Sweden. He ascended to the throne as King of Sweden and became a prominent figure in the country's history. Known for his defense of Sweden against Finnish invasions, he upheld the honor and integrity of his nation throughout his reign. One of Saint Eric's most significant contributions was the codification of Swedish law, which he did under the principles of the Gospel. He believed that God's divine law should guide the governance of his kingdom, and thus he used his position of authority to implement laws and regulations that reflected Christian ethics and values. During his reign, Eric also sought to spread the Gospel throughout his kingdom. Recognizing the power and impact of religion, he actively promoted Christianity, converting many of his subjects and establishing churches across Sweden. Notably, Saint Eric built the first large church in Sweden at Old Uppsala, which became a symbol of the nation's Christian faith. Unfortunately, Saint Eric's dedication to his country and faith faced opposition from conspiratorial anti-Christian Swedish nobles. On the 18th of May, 1161, as he left Mass, Saint Eric was tragically murdered by these conspirators. His untimely death marked him as a martyr, as he sacrificed his life in defense of his Christian beliefs. Although he was never formally canonized, the cultus of Saint Eric developed almost immediately after his death. The Swedish people recognized his holiness and embraced his memory, venerating him as a saint. Throughout the centuries, Swedes, including non-Catholics, carried his banner as a symbol of their nation's faith and resilience, inspired by his zeal in defending both their country and the Christian faith. Saint Eric of Sweden is honored as the patron saint of farmers and Sweden. His feast day falls on the 18th of May, commemorating the day he was martyred. His legacy continues to inspire individuals to be brave defenders of their faith and to uphold Gospel principles in their daily lives.
