Biography

Saint Emilian of Faenza, also known as Emilianus or Emigdius, was a Bishop who is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. Born in Ireland, he lived during the 8th century and dedicated his life to the service of God. Emilian embarked on a pilgrimage to Rome, Italy, where he venerated the tombs of the Apostles. Sadly, while returning from this sacred journey, he passed away in Faenza, Italy. It is believed that he died around 780 of natural causes. The exact location of his burial site was lost during the Lombard invasions, but it was eventually rediscovered due to a series of miracles, which varied according to different sources. As a bishop, Emilian was known for his exemplary piety, wisdom, and devotion to his flock. He was highly esteemed by the people of Faenza, Italy, where he served as the bishop of the diocese. His cultus, or devotion, was well-established in Faenza by the 12th century, indicating the high regard in which he was held. A synod held in 1321 officially established his memorial in all cities of the diocese of Faenza. The relics of Saint Emilian are enshrined in the cathedral of Faenza, a testament to the continued reverence for his life and holiness. Throughout the centuries, numerous miracles were attributed to his intercession, including cures and protection from various dangers. These miracles only served to deepen the devotion and veneration of the faithful towards him. Today, Saint Emilian of Faenza is considered the patron saint of Faenza, Italy. The people of this city turn to him for heavenly intercession in times of need, particularly in matters related to health, protection, and guidance. His feast day is celebrated on November 6th each year. As a devoted bishop and holy man, Saint Emilian left an indelible mark on the hearts of the faithful in Faenza and beyond.
