Biography

Saint Emanuele Lê Van Phung, also known as Emmanuel Le Van Phung, was a devout layman and martyr in the apostolic vicariate of West Cochinchina, in modern-day Vietnam. Born around 1796 in Ðau Nuoc, Cù Lao Giêng, Vietnam, he grew up in a region where Catholicism was thriving despite the challenges posed by the imperial rule. Emanuele dedicated his life to serving God, his family, and his community. Throughout his life, Emanuele demonstrated great piety and devotion to his faith. He was married and had a family of his own, but this did not deter him from actively participating in his local Catholic community. Emanuele was not only a loving father but also a dedicated catechist, teaching the principles of Catholicism to others in his community. Recognizing the need for a stronger Catholic presence in the region, Emanuele took it upon himself to build a church, a convent for the Daughters of Mary, a home for missionaries, and a college. These endeavors were evidence of his deep commitment to spreading the Gospel and nurturing the faith of others. However, the situation took a tragic turn when emperor Tu-Duc initiated a period of severe persecution against Catholics in Vietnam. On 7 January 1859, Emanuele was arrested for the crime of harboring a priest. Despite the extreme danger he faced, he remained steadfast in his faith and constantly encouraged his family to remain strong in their beliefs, showing charity even to their persecutors. During his time in prison, Emanuele endured unimaginable hardships, yet his unwavering faith never faltered. He continued to pray and inspire others with his unwavering devotion to God. On 13 July 1859, Emanuele was beheaded in Châu Ðoc, An Giang, Vietnam, sealing his martyrdom for the Catholic faith. After his death, Saint Emanuele's body was laid to rest in Ðau Nuoc, Cù Lao Giêng, Vietnam, where he was born. His sacrifice and devout life were recognized by Pope Pius X on 2 August 1908, who decreed his martyrdom. Pope Pius X further celebrated his sanctity by beatifying Saint Emanuele on 2 May 1909. Finally, on 19 June 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Emanuele Lê Van Phung, acknowledging him as an exemplary model of faith and martyrdom. Although no specific patronage is attributed to Saint Emanuele, his life serves as an inspiration to all Catholics, reminding them of the steadfastness, love, and selflessness that should be integral to their faith.
