Feast Day: August 17
Death: August 17, 1198
Saint Donatus of Ripacandida, also known as Donatello or Donato, was born into a humble and impoverished family in the year 1179 in Ripacandida, a small village in the diocese of Rapallo, Italy. He was named after his patron saint, Donatus of Arezzo, an early Christian martyr. From an early age, Donatus showed a deep devotion to God and a strong desire to serve Him. As a young man, Donatus joined the Benedictine monks at the monastery of Sant’Onofrio Massadiruta in Petina, Italy. He dedicated himself to a life of prayer, study, and manual labor. In 1194, he was transferred to the Montevergine abbey, a renowned spiritual center and pilgrimage site. However, Donatus felt called to return to Sant’Onofrio Massadiruta in the following year. Upon his return, Donatus embraced various tasks within the monastery. He worked diligently in the garden, tending to the crops, and caring for the farm animals. In addition, he toiled in the bakery, preparing bread and other provisions for the community. Despite his meager surroundings, Donatus possessed a compassionate heart and would often give away the house's food to those in need, much to the dissatisfaction of the monastery authorities. Donatus was known for his dedication to penance and mortification. In an effort to purify his soul and atone for his perceived sins, he would immerse himself naked in an icy river at night while fervently praying. He would also frequently retreat to a nearby cave to spend the night in prayer and solitude. Due to Donatus' reputation for piety and holiness, many people sought his counsel and spiritual guidance. His wisdom and humility endeared him to the community around him, and he became highly regarded as a source of spiritual insight and consolation. Sadly, Saint Donatus of Ripacandida's life was cut short. On August 17, 1198, at the age of only 19, he passed away peacefully from natural causes. Although his earthly life was brief, his impact on the faithful endured. Countless individuals were inspired by his selflessness, devotion, and commitment to serving God and others. In recognition of his virtuous life and the spiritual benefits attributed to his intercession, Saint Donatus of Ripacandida was declared a saint in the Catholic Church. He is venerated as the patron saint of various places in Italy, including Auletta, Basilicata, Melfi, Montevergine, Rapolla, Ripacandida, and Ruoti. Saint Donatus' feast day is commemorated on the 17th of August each year, a day that serves as a reminder of his exemplary faith, humility, and selfless devotion to God and his fellow human beings. Through his intercession, may we be inspired to follow his example and deepen our own relationship with the Divine.
