Biography

Saint Donatus of Corfu, also known as Saint Donatus of Epirus, is a saint of the Catholic Church whose life and deeds have become somewhat shrouded in mystery over the centuries. Limited information exists about him, but what remains serves as a testament to his holiness and widespread veneration. Saint Donatus was believed to have lived during the 4th century in Epirus, a region in present-day Greece. He was known for his exemplary faith and piety, which attracted the attention of the wider Christian community. As a result, he received the mantle of the bishopric in this region, where his leadership and spiritual guidance were highly revered. In the late 6th century, more than a century after his death, Saint Gregory the Great, who was then Pope, sought to preserve and honor the memory of Saint Donatus. In 600, Saint Gregory had the relics of Saint Donatus enshrined on the island of Corfu, which lies off the western coast of Greece.
