Biography

Saint Donatus of Besancon, also known as Donato, was a Benedictine monk and Bishop of Besancon in France during the 7th century. He was a notable monastic reformer and founded the Saint Paul Abbey at Besancon. Saint Donatus is revered for his spirituality, leadership, and his contributions to the monastic tradition through the writing of the Rule for Virgins. Little is known about the early life of Saint Donatus. He was born in the 6th century and entered the Benedictine monastery at Luxeuil, France, which was renowned for its piety and adherence to the Rule of Saint Benedict. Donatus quickly distinguished himself as a devoted monk and acquired a reputation for his wisdom, holiness, and ability to lead others. In 624, Saint Donatus was appointed as the Bishop of Besancon, a position of great responsibility and influence.
