Biography

Saint Donatus of Arezzo, also known as Donato, was an esteemed bishop and martyr of the early Catholic Church. Born in Nicomedia, which is part of modern-day Turkey, he received a comprehensive education in Rome, Italy. During the oppressive reign of Emperor Diocletian, when Christians faced severe persecution, Donatus sought refuge in the city of Arezzo, Italy. Donatus's piety and erudition caught the attention of the local Christian community, leading to his election as the second bishop of Arezzo in the year 346. As bishop, Donatus dedicated himself to spreading the teachings of Christ, caring for his flock, and defending the faith against heresy. One of the challenges Donatus faced was dealing with the prevalence of paganism in the region. The popular tradition in Arezzo involved an ancient dragon slumbering beneath the city, which was believed to poison the water supply. Donatus, driven by his faith and determination, confronted this superstition head-on. According to legend, he successfully freed the poisoned well from the dragon, winning the admiration and gratitude of the people. His representations in art often depict him as a bishop holding a sword and dragon, beheaded with a sword, or stabbed with a dagger. Other portrayals depict him freeing a poisoned well from a dragon or kneeling at an altar while an angel whispers to him. Additionally, he is sometimes depicted with a chalice and a dragon at his feet, or on horseback raising his crozier against a dragon. Due to the influence and legacy of Saint Donatus, numerous places have chosen him as their patron saint. In Germany, he is the patron saint of Bautzen. In Italy, he is revered as the patron of Arezzo, the city he served as bishop. He is also the patron saint of the Diocese of Arezzo-Cortona-Sansepolcro, Castiglione Messer Raimondo, Cavriglia, and Osio Sotto. Furthermore, Saint Donatus's relics were interred in the cathedral of Arezzo, Italy, after his death. Some of his relics can also be found at the basilica of San Donato in Murano, Venice, as well as in Ostia, Italy.
