Biography

Saint Domnio of Salona, also known as Domnione or Donnione, was a revered figure in early Christianity. He was numbered among the 72 disciples sent by Christ during His early ministry. Little is known about his life before his encounter with Christ, but it is believed that he was born in Syria. Saint Domnio had the privilege of accompanying Saint Peter the Apostle to Rome, Italy. It was during this time that he received his calling as a missionary. Feeling the fervent call to spread the Gospel, Domnio embarked on a mission to Dalmatia, where he tirelessly preached and converted many to the Christian faith. The city of Salona, located near modern Solin in Croatia, became the epicenter of Saint Domnio's missionary work. He was appointed as the first bishop of Salona, establishing a strong Christian community in the region. As a bishop, he shepherded his flock with immense devotion, leading them on the path of righteousness and nurturing their spiritual growth. However, Saint Domnio's unwavering commitment to the Faith was not without difficulties. He faced persecution and opposition from those who rejected the Christian message. Despite the challenges, he remained steadfast in his mission, undeterred by the dangers that lay before him. Ultimately, Saint Domnio's steadfast faith would lead to his martyrdom. Alongside eight soldiers whom he had brought to the Faith, Domnio underwent a cruel fate at the hands of his persecutors. He was beheaded at Salona, sealing his commitment to Christ with the ultimate sacrifice. After his martyrdom, Saint Domnio's relics were venerated in Solin and in the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome, Italy. His lasting legacy as a faithful disciple, missionary, and bishop contributed to the growth of Christianity in Dalmatia and beyond, inspiring countless individuals to profess their faith in Christ. Although Saint Domnio does not have a specific patronage or attributed representation, his life serves as a shining example of unwavering devotion to the Christian faith. His feast day is commemorated on April 11th, a time when believers honor his memory and reflect on the selflessness and sacrifice he displayed throughout his life. While Saint Domnio's canonization predates the formal process established by the Church, he is recognized and venerated as a saint in the pre-congregation era, solidifying his place as a revered figure in the history of Catholicism.
