Biography

Saint Domitian of Lerins, also known as Domitian of Bebron or Domiziano, was born around 347 in Rome, Italy. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he was orphaned at a young age. When he reached adulthood, Domitian made the selfless decision to give away all his possessions to the poor and dedicate his life to God. Domitian took up the monastic life and became a monk in Rome. However, he later felt called to emigrate to Gaul, where he settled in Lerins Abbey, located in present-day Southern France. Lerins Abbey was renowned for its commitment to monasticism and spiritual fervor. Domitian found kinship among the monks there and became an integral part of their community. In his devotion to spreading the message of Christianity, Domitian built an oratory dedicated to Saint Christopher in the neighborhood of Lyons, France. This oratory served as a place of worship for the local population. Domitian's hermetic way of life exemplified his desire to live in solitude and dedicate his days to prayer and reflection. With time, Domitian felt a calling to establish a new monastery. He founded the monastery of Bebron, which later became known as Saint Rambert de Joux. Domitian served as the abbot of this monastery, guiding the monks in their spiritual pursuits and daily activities. Saint Domitian of Lerins lived a life of prayer, contemplation, and selflessness. He was revered for his unwavering commitment to poverty and his acts of charity toward the less fortunate. He was known to be humble and devout, constantly seeking God's guidance in his life. Saint Domitian passed away in 440 at the Saint Rambert de Joux Abbey of natural causes. Although he lived centuries before the formal process of canonization began, he is recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church.
