Biography

Saint Dominica of Campania, also known as Saint Dominica of Tropea, is a revered Catholic saint who lived during the third century. She was born in the year 287 in Tropea, Calabria, Italy, and was the daughter of Doroteo and Arsenia, according to historical accounts.

During the reign of Emperor Diocletian, who was known for his brutal persecutions of Christians, Saint Dominica valiantly defended her faith. She is known to have actively engaged in the destruction of pagan idols, thereby becoming a target for the authorities seeking to suppress Christianity.

In the face of persecution, Saint Dominica fearlessly declared her allegiance to Christ. Her unwavering devotion and refusal to renounce her faith led to her martyrdom. Various historical records suggest that she was subjected to torment and eventually thrown to wild animals. Remarkably, the wild animals refused to harm her, a testament to her holiness. Ultimately, Saint Dominica was martyred through beheading on the 6th of July in 303 AD, in Nicomedia, Bithynia (located in modern-day Turkey).

After her martyrdom, Saint Dominica's relics were laid to rest in Vizzini, Italy. Moreover, her remains were enshrined in the cathedral of Tropea, Calabria, Italy, where she was born. The significance of her martyrdom and the veneration she received led to her canonization by the Pre-Congregation. It is noteworthy that the Sacred Congregation of Rites granted a special Mass in her honor to Tropea, Calabria, Italy, on the 14th of May 1672.

Saint Dominica of Campania holds a special place of patronage in several regions of Italy, including Camaldoli, Caraffa di Catanzaro, Mandanici, Scorrano, Torre di Ruggiero, Tremestieri, and Tropea. As a patron saint, she is revered for her valor, unwavering faith, and dedication to the Christian cause.

Though the representation attributed to Saint Dominica of Tropea is not explicitly mentioned in historical documents, her steadfastness and martyrdom serve as an inspiration to many believers across the ages. Her courageous actions in the face of persecution continue to inspire devotion and reverence for her holy example.
