Biography

Saint Domèce, also known as Domèce of Quros, Domèce the Doctor, Domèce the Physician, Dometios, Domezio, Dometius, and Domitius, was a pagan physician in the service of the Roman Emperor Valens during the fourth century. Little is known about Domèce's early life and upbringing, but historical records indicate that he served as a physician to the Emperor Valens. It was during this time, sometime between 364 and 378, that an angel appeared to Domèce and rebuked him for his mistreatment and abuse of Christians. This encounter deeply affected him and led him on a journey of spiritual transformation. Prompted by the angel's admonition, Domèce sought guidance and enlightenment. He was directed to a cave hermit located on Mount Qouros in Armenia. It was in the presence of this hermit that he learned about Christianity and underwent a profound conversion. Domèce embraced Christianity wholeheartedly, received baptism, and decided to dedicate his life to a hermitic existence. For over three decades, Domèce lived as a hermit in the cave on Mount Qouros, delving deep into prayer, contemplation, and the pursuit of spiritual wisdom. As a former physician, he utilized his knowledge and skills to heal those who sought his assistance, extending his care to both humans and animals alike. It is believed that through his prayers, Saint Domèce performed various miraculous healings, including curing individuals of diseases and ailments, such as, notably, the healing of sciatica. Saint Domèce's reputation as a holy man and a healer eventually drew the attention and admiration of the surrounding community. His cave hermitage became a site of pilgrimage, attracting devotees seeking spiritual guidance and miraculous cures. Inspired by his exemplary life, a monastery was established in his honor near the cave, and it flourished for some time. However, as centuries passed, the monastery was eventually abandoned, and its ruins now serve as a testament to Saint Domèce's enduring legacy. Saint Domèce passed away in the late 4th century, believed to have died of natural causes. He was buried in his cave hermitage, and according to legend, the same angel who led him to his conversion also attended to his burial. Saint Domèce's tomb became a place of veneration and continued pilgrimage for many faithful believers. In recognition of his virtuous life and the numerous healings attributed to him, Saint Domèce was eventually canonized as a saint. Although the exact date of his canonization is not known, it is believed to have taken place prior to the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Thus, he is regarded as a Pre-Congregation saint. Saint Domèce's feast days are celebrated on July 5th and October 4th in the Orthodox calendar, providing an opportunity for devotees to honor his memory and seek his intercession. He is especially venerated as the patron saint of those suffering from hip problems, as his renowned healing of sciatica has earned him this particular association. The life of Saint Domèce serves as an inspiring example of a pagan physician who, through a divine encounter and subsequent conversion, embraced Christianity and dedicated himself to a life of prayer, healing, and solitude. His unwavering commitment to his newfound faith and his compassionate care for the afflicted continue to inspire and offer solace to believers to this day.
