Biography

Saint Disciola of Poitiers was born in the 6th century and was the niece of Saint Salvius, the bishop of Albi, France. Little is known about the early life of Disciola, but her association with her uncle, who was known for his holiness and piety, likely influenced her own spiritual journey. At some point, Disciola decided to dedicate her life to God and entered the Abbey of Santa Croce in Poitiers, France. It was at this abbey where she found her spiritual mentor in Saint Agnes of Poitiers, a renowned figure in the Catholic Church known for her deep spirituality and commitment to the religious life. Under Saint Agnes' guidance, Disciola grew in her knowledge of the faith and learned how to live a life of humility, personal piety, and strict adherence to the Rule of her house. Disciola's commitment to her vows and her exemplary lifestyle soon gained her a reputation within the community and beyond. Her humility was particularly noted by those who encountered her, as she showed genuine kindness and care for others, always considering herself as the least among her fellow nuns. This humility, coupled with her personal piety, made her a spiritual role model for many. Saint Disciola of Poitiers passed away in the year 583 of natural causes. Her burial took place in the crypt of the church of Santa Maria Outside the Walls, where her mortal remains found their final resting place. Although the exact representations of Saint Disciola are not recorded, it is believed that she is often depicted in traditional religious artwork as a nun, symbolizing her dedication to the religious life. Saint Disciola of Poitiers' feast day is commemorated on May 13th, particularly in the Archdiocese of Poitiers, France, where she spent her life as a nun.
