Biography

Saint Fidelis of Como, also known as Fedele, was a Christian soldier in the imperial Roman army who was martyred in the persecutions under Maximian Herculeus. Little is known about his early life, but he is believed to have been born in Como, Italy, during the third century. Fidelis dedicated himself to the Christian faith and became a soldier in the Roman army. Despite the risks involved, he openly professed his Christian beliefs, refusing to renounce his faith even in the face of persecution. He understood the potential consequences of his actions but remained steadfast and unwavering in his commitment to Christ. During the reign of Maximian Herculeus, a fierce persecutor of Christians, Fidelis became one of the many targets. He was arrested and brought before the Roman authorities, who demanded that he renounce his faith and offer sacrifices to the pagan gods. However, Fidelis remained resolute, refusing to renounce his Christian beliefs. His unyielding faith in the face of adversity inspired many others. As a result of his refusal to comply with the demands of the authorities, Fidelis was subjected to various forms of torture and cruelty. Despite enduring immense pain, he never wavered in his dedication to Christianity and remained steadfast until the end. Eventually, he was martyred, dying around the year 304. Following his death, Fidelis' relics were venerated in Como, Italy, where he was originally from. His sanctity and the miracles attributed to him led to a widespread veneration of his relics, attracting pilgrims from far and wide. Furthermore, his relics were also venerated in Milan, Italy, as a testament to the impact and devotion he inspired. To honor Saint Fidelis, his feast days are celebrated on October 28 and 29 in the Diocese of Como, Italy. Additionally, another feast day is observed on March 13 to commemorate the translation of his relics in Arona, Italy. These celebrations serve as a reminder of his strength of faith and the sacrifices he made for the Christian faith. Although Saint Fidelis has not been formally canonized by the Catholic Church, he is recognized as a saint from the pre-congregation era. He is particularly venerated in Italy, where he is considered a patron saint. He is revered in various towns and cities, including Arona, Castelnuovo Magra, Mello, Palazzolo sull'Oglio, and Plesio. Saint Fidelis of Como continues to be an inspiration for believers today.
