Biography

Saint Cyneburga of Gloucester, also known as Cyniburg or Kineburga, was a princess who desired to devote herself wholly to God. Born in an era where arranged marriages were common, Cyneburga sought refuge in Gloucester to escape such a fate. It is through her courage and determination that her remarkable story unfolded. Having left behind her prestigious position in society, Cyneburga arrived in Gloucester and sought employment as a maid in a baker's household. Little did she know that her life would take an unexpected turn. The baker's wife, filled with envy towards the young woman's beauty and purity, grew increasingly resentful of her presence. Tragically, this jealousy turned into a murderous plot. The baker's wife, driven by her own wickedness, killed Cyneburga and disposed of her body by throwing it into a well. However, the evil deed could not remain hidden for long. The truth was soon revealed when Cyneburga's body was discovered in the well. Once her body was recovered, it was given a proper burial nearby. Miraculously, reports of miracles started to emerge at her graveside. People from far and wide flocked to pay homage to this virtuous young woman, and the miracles that occurred seemed to validate her sanctity. The fame of Saint Cyneburga's holy life and the miracles associated with her relics continued to grow. Consequently, the decision was made to move her remains to a more suitable resting place. Archbishop Courtenay and Bishop Henry Wakefield of Worcester undertook the solemn task of translating her relics on 10 April 1390. Even after her relics were moved, the miracles that had become synonymous with Saint Cyneburga did not cease. These extraordinary occurrences further solidified her status as a saint of immense faith and divine favor. Saint Cyneburga of Gloucester was recognized as a saint before the establishment of the formal canonization process. As such, she does not possess an official canonization date. Nonetheless, her sanctity and devotion to God were acknowledged and celebrated by the faithful, making her a significant figure in Catholic history. Although specific representations of Saint Cyneburga are not widely known or documented, her legacy lives on through the miracles attributed to her intercession and her inspiring journey of faith and martyrdom.
