Feast Day: May 11
Saint Criotan of Macreddin, also known by various names such as Criotan of Aghavannagh, Criotan of Aghamanagh, Criotan Mac Iolladon, Chritoc of..., Chritocus of..., Credan of..., Credanus of..., Credin of..., Credus of..., Cridanus of..., Critanus of..., and Mochritocus of..., was born in the 6th century in Cornwall, England. He belonged to a family with his father named Illudion, also referred to as Iladon or Lolladon. Tragically, Criotan was involved in an accident that resulted in the unintentional killing of his own father. Deeply disturbed by this incident and the weight of guilt, he decided to withdraw from the world and chose to live as a humble swineherd. Seeking guidance and solace, Criotan became a spiritual student of the renowned Saint Petroc. After spending a significant period under the spiritual guidance of Saint Petroc, Criotan embarked on a journey to Ireland to further his spiritual education. He immersed himself in the study of holy men in Ireland, dedicating himself to deepening his understanding of the Catholic faith. Criotan remained in Ireland for approximately twenty years, embracing the opportunity to learn from the spiritual masters and foster his own spiritual growth. Following his time in Ireland, Criotan returned to his homeland in Cornwall. Inspired by his experiences and the wisdom he had acquired, he felt called to establish a church in Sancreed, Cornwall. With great devotion and zeal, he founded the church, creating a space for the local community to gather in worship and prayer. Throughout his life, Criotan exemplified a profound commitment to his spiritual journey and the teachings of Christ. He dedicated himself to a life of humility, self-reflection, and service to God. His experiences as a swineherd and his studies under Saint Petroc and the Irish holy men enriched his understanding of the Catholic faith. Criotan's deepened spirituality and knowledge became evident through his establishment of the church in Sancreed, which became a source of spiritual nourishment for the local faithful. After a long life dedicated to God, Saint Criotan of Macreddin passed away peacefully in the 7th century from natural causes. Recognized for his sanctity and exemplary life, he was eventually canonized as a saint, though the exact details of his canonization are not available. He holds the distinction of being venerated as a saint within the pre-congregation era of the Catholic Church. Although there is no specific patronage attributed to Saint Criotan of Macreddin, his inspiring story of repentance, spiritual growth, and dedication to God serves as an example for all believers. His feast day is celebrated on May 11th, allowing the faithful to honor his memory and seek his intercession in their own spiritual journeys.
