Biography

Saint Constantius of Perugia, also known as Costanzo of Perugia, was the first bishop of Perugia, Italy. He was born around the year 140 and dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Christianity. Renowned for his evangelization efforts, he fearlessly proclaimed the faith to the people of Perugia and its surrounding regions. At the young age of 30, Constantius became the bishop of Perugia, where he served his community with great love and compassion. He dedicated himself to caring for the poor and needy, exuding a deep sense of humility and leading by example. His simple and frugal lifestyle served as a rebuke to the ruling classes, as he emphasized the importance of selflessness and rejected material wealth. During the reign of Marcus Aurelius, a time of intense persecution of Christians, Constantius and many of his fellow believers faced immense hardships. They were imprisoned, subjected to severe tortures, and finally, martyred for their unwavering faith. Despite the suffering, Constantius remained steadfast in his commitment to Christ, inspiring and encouraging his fellow believers to remain faithful until the end. Saint Constantius' martyrdom took place in the year 170, as he was beheaded for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. His bravery and sacrifice became an inspiration to Christians in Perugia and beyond, as they looked to him as a model of unwavering faith and devotion to God. After his death, Constantius' relics were first enshrined in an altar in the church of San Constanzo in 1205. Recognizing the significance of his remains, they were re-enshrined in 1781, and subsequently in 1825 at a new altar in the present church of San Constanzo. The veneration of his relics became a cherished tradition for the faithful who sought his intercession and divine protection. Saint Constantius was not formally canonized in the sense we understand today, as the canonization process as we know it did not exist during his time. However, he is considered a saint by popular devotion and veneration, recognized by the faithful for his virtuous life, martyrdom, and intercession. He is honored annually on January 29th, the feast day dedicated to his memory. Saint Constantius of Perugia is revered as the patron saint of Perugia-Città della Pieve, Italy, as well as the archdiocese and city of Perugia. His intercession is sought by the faithful for various needs, including the protection of the Church and the preservation of the Christian faith.
