Saint Constantius of Aquino, also known as Costantino and Constanzo, was a prominent figure in the early Christian Church. He was born in Aquino, Italy, and lived during the 5th century. Constantius served as the Bishop of Aquino from approximately 465 to his death in 487. One significant event in Saint Constantius' life was his attendance at the Council of Rome in 465. This council was an important gathering of bishops from various regions, and it addressed several theological and disciplinary issues of the time. Constantius actively participated in the discussions and decisions made during the council. One of the notable characteristics attributed to Saint Constantius was his gift of prophecy. He was known for his ability to foresee future events through divine inspiration. Pope Saint Gregory the Great, who lived several centuries later, mentioned Constantius in his work called the Dialogues. Additionally, a biography of Constantius was written by Peter the Deacon, further highlighting his impact and influence during his lifetime. Constantius passed away around the year 487 in Aquino, Italy, from natural causes. His relics were initially enshrined in a church dedicated to him outside the walls of the city of Aquino. In 1644, his remains were moved to the cathedral of Saint Peter in Aquino and placed under the altar. However, during World War II, the cathedral was destroyed in May 1944. Despite the destruction of the cathedral, Saint Constantius' relics were not lost. On 10 December 1742, a new wooden reliquary urn was fashioned for his remains, and they were re-interred under the main altar in the cathedral of San Costanzo in Aquino. This cathedral became the new home for his venerated relics. The canonization of Saint Constantius of Aquino took place before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, thus making it a pre-congregation canonization. This means that the recognition of Constantius as a saint took place prior to the standard procedures implemented by the Catholic Church. Saint Constantius is revered as the patron saint of Aquino, Italy, his birthplace. He is also venerated as the patron saint of the dioceses of Aquino-Pontecorvo and Sora-Aquino-Pontecorvo in Italy. Faithful followers continue to honor and seek his intercession, believing in his saintly virtues and advocacy for the people of Aquino and the surrounding regions.
