Saint Chrysogonus

Feast Day: November 24

Death: November 1, 23
Saint Chrysogonus, also known as Crisogono or Grisogono, was a priest and functionary of the vicarius Urbis in Rome during the time of the early Christian Church. He is remembered as a Christian teacher and mentor to Saint Anastasia of Sirmium, the daughter of the Roman noble Praetextatus. Little is known about Saint Chrysogonus's early life, but it is believed that he was born in Rome and dedicated his life to serving God as a priest. His close association with the vicarius Urbis, the official in charge of the city's administration, allowed him to spread the teachings of Christianity and provide spiritual guidance to fellow believers. During the reign of Emperor Diocletian, a fierce persecution of Christians began in the Roman Empire. Saint Chrysogonus remained steadfast in his faith, openly practicing and teaching Christianity despite the increasing danger. However, his unwavering faith would eventually lead to his imprisonment. While in prison, Saint Chrysogonus found solace in his letters to Saint Anastasia of Sirmium, who also faced persecution for her Christian beliefs. Through his correspondence, he offered her guidance, encouragement, and comfort. His words served as a source of strength for Saint Anastasia throughout her ordeal. Sadly, Saint Chrysogonus's steadfast commitment to his faith ultimately cost him his life. On November 23, 304, he was beheaded in Aquileia, Italy, as a result of his refusal to renounce Christianity. After his execution, his body was callously thrown into the sea. However, by divine providence, his remains washed ashore and were discovered by an aged priest named Zoilus. Zoilus, recognizing the sanctity of Saint Chrysogonus, gave him a proper burial in Venice, Italy. Today, a relic of Saint Chrysogonus's head can still be found in the Church of Saint Chrysogonus in Rome, serving as a reminder of his martyrdom and enduring faith. While not much information is available about Saint Chrysogonus's specific patronages and representations, his memory is honored on November 24 in the Roman calendar and on April 16 in the Greek calendar. He was officially recognized as a saint in the pre-Congregation era, reflecting his early veneration by the Christian community. Saint Chrysogonus's life and martyrdom stand as an example of unwavering faith and dedication to the teachings of Christianity. His commitment to the truth, even in the face of persecution, inspires believers to live their faith boldly and fearlessly.
