Biography

Saint Chelidonia, also known as Celidona or Quelidona, was a hermitess and Benedictine nun who dedicated her life to serving God. She was born in Ciculum, Abruzzi, Italy, and lived during the 12th century. Chelidonia began her religious journey at Saint Scholastica Abbey near Tivoli, Italy, where she joined the Benedictine order. However, she felt a strong calling to live a life of solitude and contemplation, so after only a short time in the community, she left the abbey and settled in a cave near Tivoli. For the next six decades, Chelidonia embraced a hermitic lifestyle, withdrawing from the world to devote herself entirely to prayer, penance, and union with God. During her time as a hermitess, Chelidonia gained a reputation for her profound holiness and spiritual wisdom. Many sought her counsel, and she became known as a spiritual guide and mentor to those who came to visit her. Despite her solitude, Chelidonia was deeply connected to the people of Subiaco, Italy, where her reputation as a saintly woman grew throughout the region. Chelidonia's life was characterized by intense asceticism and self-denial. She lived in complete poverty, relying solely on what God provided for her through the generosity of others. Chelidonia was known for her unwavering faith and trust in divine providence, believing that God would always provide for her needs. In 1138, at the age of advanced years, Chelidonia passed away peacefully due to natural causes. Her death was marked by a profound spiritual event witnessed by many, including Pope Eugenius III. It is said that as she drew her last breath, her soul was seen ascending to heaven, a testament to her deep union with God. Chelidonia was buried in the Church of Saint Scholastic in Subiaco, Italy, where she had spent her years as a Benedictine nun. Her tomb became a site of veneration for the faithful, who sought her intercession for miracles and guidance. Over time, Chelidonia became recognized as the patron saint of Subiaco, Italy, and her feast day is commemorated on October 13th.
