Biography

Saint Catervus, also known as Catervo or Flavius Julius Catervus, was born into the imperial Roman nobility. He held the esteemed position of Roman prefect and was highly regarded in his community. Catervus was a devoted follower of the Christian faith and was married to Saint Severina, with whom he had a son named Saint Bassus. In the 4th century, Catervus undertook the courageous mission of spreading Christianity to the city of Tolentino, located in Italy. Despite the risks involved, he fearlessly preached the teachings of Jesus Christ, sharing the message of love, compassion, and salvation with the people of Tolentino. However, Catervus's dedication to his faith and his evangelistic activities ultimately brought him into conflict with the authorities. It was during this time that he faced persecution for his Christian beliefs. Catervus, refusing to renounce his faith, suffered martyrdom for his unwavering commitment to the Gospel. The exact date of his martyrdom is not known, but it occurred during the 4th century in Tolentino, Italy. Following his martyrdom, Catervus's relics were venerated and preserved in the Cathedral of San Catervo in Tolentino. The cathedral, which was built over his original sarcophagus, serves as a place of pilgrimage and devotion for believers. In the year 1455, Catervus's sarcophagus was opened, revealing his earthly remains. His head was then transferred to a reliquary, allowing the faithful to venerate this sacred relic. The canonization of Saint Catervus occurred before the official establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, making him a Pre-Congregation saint. Today, Saint Catervus is recognized as the patron saint of the Macerata-Tolentino-Recanati-Cingoli-Treia diocese in Italy. In particular, he is revered as a protector for the city of Tolentino, where his devoted ministry took place. As a saint who fearlessly defended his faith and sacrificed his life for the Gospel, Saint Catervus serves as an inspiration for Christians around the world.
