Feast Day: January 19
Saint Catellus of Castellammare, also known as Catellus of Aureo, was a revered bishop and hermit who lived in the 9th century. Not much is known about his early life or family background, but he is honored as a close friend and companion of Saint Antoninus of Sorrento, a prominent bishop of that time. Saint Catellus served as the Bishop of Castellammare di Stabia, a coastal town in Italy. His episcopal ministry was marked by great dedication and a deep sense of pastoral care for his flock. Despite his esteemed position, Saint Catellus felt called to withdraw from the demands of his public role and seek a more contemplative and ascetic life. Finding solace in the solitude of Mount Aureo, located near Castellammare di Stabia, Saint Catellus embraced a life of prayer, penance, and deep introspection. He spent a significant part of his life as a hermit, living in communion with God and contemplating the mysteries of the faith. Saint Catellus became renowned for his exceptional holiness and wisdom, attracting many people seeking spiritual guidance and counsel. He used his spiritual gifts to minister to those who sought him out, offering them solace, consolation, and guidance on their own spiritual journeys. Throughout his life, Saint Catellus exemplified the virtues of humility, selflessness, and devotion to God. His humble and austere lifestyle inspired many, and his reputation as a miracle-worker grew. Stories of his intercession spread throughout the region, and people sought his prayers for healing, protection, and spiritual guidance. Saint Catellus died in the 9th century, leaving a lasting legacy of holiness and devotion. His cultus, or devout following, continued to grow in the centuries following his death, with numerous miracles attributed to his intercession. On September 13, 1729, his cultus was officially confirmed, and Saint Catellus of Castellammare was canonized by the Catholic Church. As a pre-congregation saint, his veneration dates back to ancient times, highlighting the profound impact he had on the faithful throughout history. Today, Saint Catellus is honored as the patron saint of Castellammare di Stabia, both the city and the diocese, where his memory is cherished and celebrated. His feast day is commemorated on January 19th, a day dedicated to honoring his remarkable life, faith, and commitment to the service of God and the Church.
