Biography

Saint Calminius, also known as Calmilius, Calmin, Calminio, Calmery, and Carmery, was a duke in the region of Aquitaine, which is now modern-day France. He was also the count of Auvergne. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he served as a soldier during his youth. At some point, Calminius felt a strong calling to religious life and decided to dedicate himself to serving God. He founded the Saint-Chaffre du Monastier oratory in Villars, France. This oratory quickly became a spiritual hub and attracted many monks who sought Calminius' guidance. Interestingly, Calminius eventually chose to withdraw from the community of monks and lived as a hermit in the area of Limoges, France. This was a period of solitude and intense spiritual contemplation for him. After some time, Calminius felt compelled to return to public life. He founded Laguenne Abbey near Tulle, located in the Corrèze region of France. It was a center for religious study and a place for monks to live and worship together. During his time at Laguenne Abbey, Calminius studied the Benedictine Rule, a set of guidelines for monastic life. He became well-versed in this rule and incorporated it into the practices of the abbey. With a group of 20 monks, Calminius then went on to found Mauzac Abbey in Puy-de-Dome, France. This new abbey, probably based on the principles of the Benedictine Rule, further strengthened the spiritual presence in the region. While there is no specific information about any representations of Saint Calminius, it is likely that he is depicted in traditional Christian attire as a monk or a hermit. Saint Calminius passed away around the year 690, most likely from natural causes. Although his exact date of death is not known, his feast day is celebrated on August 19th. Saint Calminius was recognized for his devotion to God and his tireless efforts in establishing and nurturing religious communities. While he has not been declared as a patron saint for any specific cause or group, his life and example continue to inspire those who seek a deeper connection with God.
