Biography

Saint Calepodius of Rome, also known as Calepodio, was a priest who lived during the early 3rd century in Rome, Italy. He became a prominent figure in Christian history and ultimately met a martyr's death during the persecutions carried out by Emperor Alexander Severus. Not much is known about Saint Calepodius' early life or background, but his courageous faith and dedication to spreading the teachings of Christianity made a lasting impact. As a priest, he served the faithful in Rome, offering spiritual guidance and support during a particularly tumultuous time for the Christian community. In the year 232, Emperor Alexander Severus initiated a wave of persecutions against Christians, targeting those who openly practiced their faith. Saint Calepodius found himself at the center of this persecution due to his steadfast devotion to Christianity. He was arrested for his religious beliefs and subsequently subjected to a brutal and torturous execution. According to historical accounts, Saint Calepodius was stabbed with a sword and left to die on the streets of Rome. In a desperate attempt to further humiliate him, his lifeless body was then dragged through the city and eventually thrown into the River Tiber. Despite these acts of desecration, his body was later recovered and given a proper burial by Pope Callistus I, who recognized his extraordinary witness to the faith. The devotion and veneration of Saint Calepodius did not end with his burial. In the 10th century, his relics were enshrined in the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome. Throughout the centuries, many faithful Christians have sought solace and guidance through his intercession. In addition to Rome, some of his relics are also enshrined in the church of Notre-Dame de Reims in Rheims, France. Saint Calepodius of Rome's feast day is celebrated on May 10th, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. Although he lived and died long before the official process of canonization was established, he is revered as a saint by the Catholic Church. Therefore, he is considered to be among the pre-congregation saints, whose sanctity and virtuous lives were recognized prior to the formal canonization process. While Saint Calepodius may not be widely known or recognized, his life and martyrdom serve as a powerful reminder of the persecution endured by early Christians.
