Saint

Feast Day: March 24

Biography

Saint Caimin of Lough Derg, also known as Camin of Inniskeltra, Caminus of Lough Derg, or Cammin of Inniskeltra, was an Irish hermit and monastic founder. He was born in Ireland, the son of Dima and Cuman, and was related to the kings of Leinster. He was also the half-brother of Guare, the king of Connaught. Little is known about Saint Caimin's early life, but it is believed that he received a good education. Drawn to a life of solitude and prayer, he decided to become a hermit and settled on the island of Inniskeltra, located in Lough Derg. His reputation for holiness spread, and many students were attracted to learn from him. Saint Caimin was not alone in his hermitage. He was joined by Saint Senan of North Wales, and together they founded a monastery and a chapel called Tempul-Cammin on the island of the Seven Churches. This holy site became a significant spiritual center in Ireland. However, it was repeatedly raided by the Danes over the years. Despite these challenges, the monastery was occupied for more than 350 years, and some of its ruins can still be seen today. Saint Caimin was highly regarded for his knowledge of sacred scripture, particularly his commentary on the Psalms. A portion of this commentary, written in his own hand, has survived. This manuscript provides valuable insights into his theological thoughts and teachings. In addition to his scholarly pursuits, Saint Caimin was also renowned as a miracle worker. Numerous accounts exist of his intercession and acts of healing. His miraculous interventions earned him a strong reputation among the local population. Saint Caimin passed away in the year 653, dying a natural death. His sanctity and the impact of his spiritual teachings were recognized by the faithful, even before the formal canonization process was established. As a result, he was venerated as a saint before the Pre-Congregation period. Though Saint Caimin does not have a specific patronage, he is remembered and celebrated on his feast days, March 24th and March 25th in some places. Saint Caimin of Lough Derg remains an inspiration and example for those seeking a life of solitude, prayer, and deep spiritual contemplation. His dedication to learning and his commitment to serving others through his miraculous works continue to inspire and guide believers today.
