Biography

Saint Anselm of Nonantola, also known as Anselm of Friuli, was born in the town of Forum Juhi, which is now known as Friuli, Italy. He lived during the eighth century and led a remarkable life as a Duke of Friuli, Italy, and brother-in-law of the Lombard King Aistulph. Anselm began his career as a soldier and exhibited great skill and bravery on the battlefield. However, he eventually felt a strong calling towards a religious and spiritual life, which led him to become a cleric. In 753, Anselm made the decision to dedicate himself to God entirely and became a Benedictine monk in Rome, Italy. After his monastic consecration, Anselm was appointed as the abbot of the house at Nonantola. Under his dedicated and wise leadership, the abbey flourished, growing to accommodate a community of over a thousand brothers. Anselm was not only concerned with the spiritual welfare of his fellow monks but also with the care and hospitality offered to those in need. With this in mind, he founded two significant institutions in Fanano and Modena, Italy: the abbeys, which included hospitals and hostels. Anselm's devotion and spiritual authority extended beyond the boundaries of his abbey. He received special permission from Pope Stephen III to transfer the body of Pope Saint Sylvester I to the house at Nonantola, a significant honor that showcased the deep respect Anselm commanded in the Church. However, Anselm's influential position also brought him some challenges. King Desiderius, ruler of the Lombards, banished Anselm to Monte Cassino. It was an exile that lasted for seven long years. Yet, during his time away, Anselm remained steadfast in his faith and continued to serve and inspire others. Anselm's exile ended when Charlemagne, the powerful Frankish king, intervened. Charlemagne not only restored Anselm to his position as abbot but also recognized his remarkable contributions and holiness. Anselm's journey of faith and perseverance made him an exemplar of dedicated service to God and the Church. Saint Anselm of Nonantola is venerated as a saint, though he was canonized before the formal establishment of the Congregation of Rites. His feast day is celebrated annually on the 3rd of March. He is particularly honored as the patron saint of Nonantola, Italy, the town where he founded the abbey and left an indelible impact on its community. Saint Anselm of Nonantola's life and legacy serve as an inspiration for all believers to remain steadfast in times of adversity, to embrace a spirit of conversion, and to strive for holiness through selfless service to others.
