Saint Bernard-Louis Beaulieu, also known as Bernard-Louis, was born on 8 October 1840 in Langon, Gironde, France. His father passed away when he was very young, leaving his mother to raise him. Despite this loss, Bernard-Louis was fortunate to receive a solid Christian education from his mother, which instilled in him a strong faith from an early age. At the age of 17, Bernard-Louis entered the seminary of the diocese of Bordeaux in France. However, due to health issues, his studies took slightly longer than usual. Despite these challenges, he persevered and was ordained as a priest on 21 May 1864. Shortly after his ordination, he joined the Paris Foreign Missions Society, a group dedicated to missionary work abroad. In 1864, Bernard-Louis was sent to Korea, where he would serve as a missionary alongside Saint Siméon-François Berneux. The two men worked tirelessly to spread the teachings of Catholicism in a land facing severe anti-Christian persecution. Despite knowing the dangers that awaited them, Bernard-Louis and his fellow missionaries were determined to bear witness to their faith. Tragically, on 7 March 1866, Bernard-Louis and his companions fell victim to the intense persecution they had long anticipated. They were arrested, tortured, and martyred for their unwavering commitment to their beliefs. Bernard-Louis suffered a particularly brutal fate, as he was blinded by having quicklime thrown into his eyes and ultimately beheaded on a beach beside the Han River in Saenamteo, Seoul, South Korea. The sacrifice and courage of Bernard-Louis and his companions did not go unnoticed. Pope Paul VI officially recognized their martyrdom on 4 July 1968, declaring them venerable. They were beatified on 6 October 1968 by the same pope, who recognized their extraordinary lives of faith and service. Finally, on 6 May 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized them, proclaiming them saints of the Catholic Church. Today, Saint Bernard-Louis Beaulieu is honored as a courageous and selfless martyr. His feast days are celebrated on 7 March and 20 September, as part of the collective commemoration of the Martyrs of Korea. Additionally, in the diocese of Bordeaux, France, he is remembered on 21 May. Although he does not have a specific patronage assigned to him, his life continues to inspire and serve as a shining example of unwavering faith, dedication, and love for Christ.
