Biography

Saint Bernadine Realino, also known as the Apostle of Lecce, was born on 1 December 1530 in Carpi, Modena, Italy. He hailed from the Italian nobility and received a comprehensive education, studying law and medicine at Bologna, Italy. In 1556, Bernadine earned a law degree, and his talent and dedication to public service led him to various positions of leadership. He served as the Mayor of Felizzano, Alessandria, Cassine, and Castelleone in Italy, showcasing his commitment to the welfare of the people and his administrative skills. Additionally, Bernadine held the esteemed position of Chief Tax Collector in Alessandria and Superintendent of the fiefs of the marquis of Naples. Despite his successful career, Bernadine felt a strong spiritual calling and embarked on a retreat that transformed his life. In 1564, he entered the Society of Jesus and became a Jesuit. After completing his training, he was ordained as a priest in 1567. Bernadine's dedication and sanctity soon earned him the position of Novice Master in Naples. In 1574, Bernadine was sent to establish a college in Lecce, a small city in southern Italy. It was during his time in Lecce that he truly flourished as a saint. His boundless care and charity for the poor and marginalized endeared him to the local population, who viewed him as a beloved and trusted figure. What made Bernadine particularly remarkable was his humility and selflessness. He made a conscious effort to appear as a recipient rather than a provider of aid, using this approach to serve those in need without diminishing their dignity. His special concern extended to galley slaves, whom he offered comfort and support. Miracles were attributed to Bernadine throughout his life, providing tangible evidence of his holiness. One of the most striking miracles involved a small pitcher of wine that never ran dry until everyone present had been served. As Bernadine lay on his deathbed, the magistrates of Lecce formally requested that he take the city under his patronage in the afterlife. Despite being unable to speak, he nodded in affirmation and passed away soon after, whispering the names of Jesus and Mary. His Beatification took place on 12 January 1896, when Pope Leo XIII praised Bernadine's virtuous life and declared him blessed. Subsequently, on 22 June 1947, Pope Pius XII canonized him as a saint, recognizing the impact of his exemplary faith and his profound influence on the people of Lecce. Saint Bernadine Realino is now venerated as the patron saint of Carpi, Italy, both the city and the diocese. Pope Leo XII proclaimed this patronage on 25 March 1949. Additionally, he is revered as the patron saint of Lecce, Italy, a title bestowed upon him by Pope Pius XII on 15 December 1947, in recognition of his exceptional dedication to the city.
