Biography

Saint Benevenuto Scotivoli, also known as Benevenuto of Ancona, Benevenuto of Osimo, Beneventus, Benvenuto, or Benwenut, was born in 1188 in Ancona, Italy. He was a devoted follower of the Catholic faith and dedicated his life to the service of God and his fellow human beings. Benevenuto attended the prestigious University of Bologna, where he studied law. During his time there, he had the privilege of being a student of Saint Sylvester Gozzolini, a renowned monk and founder of the Sylvestrine monastic order. Inspired by his mentor's teachings and virtuous life, Benevenuto developed a deep commitment to the principles of humility, charity, and selflessness. After completing his studies, Benevenuto was ordained as a priest and became the Archdeacon in Ancona, Italy. As an Archdeacon, he played a crucial role in guiding the faithful towards a more intimate relationship with God and fostering a spirit of unity within the community. His compassionate nature and dedication to helping others quickly gained him respect and admiration. In recognition of his exemplary character, Pope Urban IV chose Benevenuto as the Bishop of Osimo, Italy. It was a challenging time for the region, as it was engulfed in the turmoil of the Guelph and Ghibelline war, a conflict between papal and imperial factions. Despite the prevailing chaos, Benevenuto remained steadfast in his commitment to his pastoral duties, tirelessly working for peace and reconciliation among the warring factions. Throughout his 13-year tenure as bishop, Benevenuto fearlessly preached the Gospel, encouraging the faithful to embrace forgiveness and reconciliation. He actively sought to alleviate the suffering caused by the war, providing support and care for the wounded and displaced. Recognizing the importance of education, he also established schools and promoted learning among the people of Osimo. Deeply devoted to the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi, Benevenuto embraced a life of poverty and simplicity. As a testament to his commitment, he willingly gave away all his possessions to the poor shortly before his passing. On March 22, 1282, Saint Benevenuto Scotivoli breathed his last breath in Osimo, Italy, having lived for 94 years. Saint Benevenuto Scotivoli was laid to rest in the cathedral of Osimo, where his relics continue to be venerated by the faithful. Recognizing his sanctity and the impact he had on the lives of the people he served, Pope Martin IV canonized him in 1284, confirming the devotion and reverence attributed to him. Today, Saint Benevenuto Scotivoli is revered as a powerful intercessor and a model of selflessness and holiness. He is especially honored as the patron saint of Osimo, Italy, where his memory is cherished and his example continues to inspire generations of faithful Catholics.
