Saint Barlaam of Novgorod, also known as Alexis, was born in Novgorod, Russia, into a wealthy family. Blessed with a strong inclination towards the spiritual life from a young age, Barlaam's devotion and desire for a closer union with God led him on a unique journey. Tragedy struck when Barlaam's parents passed away, leaving him alone to navigate the path ahead. Sensing a call to a life of solitude and contemplation, he retreated to the banks of the Volga River, where he embraced the life of a hermit. Barlaam's strict asceticism and unwavering commitment to prayer captivated the people around him, and news of his holiness quickly spread. In awe of his spiritual wisdom and desiring to learn from him, many individuals flocked to Barlaam seeking guidance. To accommodate the growing number of students, he made the decision to establish a monastery, where he became a monk and assumed the name Barlaam. The monastery founded by Barlaam became a center of spiritual formation and education. As the abbot, he dedicated himself to nurturing his disciples and guiding them toward a life of virtue.
