Saint Barachisius, also known as Berikjesu, was a devout monk who dedicated his life to serving and ministering to Christians imprisoned for their faith. Alongside his brother and fellow monk, Saint Jonas of Hubaham, he embarked on a journey to Hubaham, Persia during the reign of King Sapor II. Born in Beth-Asa, Persia, Saint Barachisius was raised in a pious family where he learned about the importance of faith and devotion. Inspired by the teachings of Christ, he decided to dedicate his life to serve God and his fellow believers. In Hubaham, Saint Barachisius and Saint Jonas encountered a hostile environment where Christians were persecuted for their religious beliefs. Undeterred by the dangers they faced, the two monks fearlessly ministered to the imprisoned Christians, offering them solace and strength during their arduous trials. Their unwavering commitment to their faith and refusal to worship the sun, moon, fire, and water led to their arrest. Subsequently, they were subjected to brutal beatings, excruciating torture, and ultimately, martyrdom. Eyewitness accounts of their trial and execution have managed to survive throughout the centuries, testifying to the unwavering faith and steadfastness of Saint Barachisius and Saint Jonas. These accounts describe the immense courage and resilience exhibited by the two monks as they endured unimaginable suffering for their beliefs. On the fateful day of December 24, 327, Saint Barachisius met his untimely death. The persecutors poured hot brimstone and pitch down his throat, inflicting unbearable pain before he was finally released from his mortal body and entered eternal glory. While the representation of Saint Barachisius is not documented, his remarkable dedication to his faith and selfless service to persecuted Christians make him an inspirational figure in the annals of Catholic history. Saint Barachisius was canonized as a saint in the Pre-Congregation era, recognizing his martyrdom and his unwavering commitment to upholding his beliefs even in the face of extreme adversity. Though he does not have a designated patronage, Saint Barachisius serves as a model of courage, faith, and compassion for believers today. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire people to remain steadfast in their faith and serve others selflessly, even in the most challenging circumstances. Every year, on 29th March, the Catholic Church commemorates the feast day of Saint Barachisius, honoring his martyrdom and celebrating his devotion to God and fellow believers.
