Saint Bademus

Biography

Saint Bademus, also known as Bademo or Vadim, was born to a wealthy Persian noble family in Betlapeta, Persia. From a young age, he showed little interest in material possessions or worldly matters. As he grew older, his desire for a deeper spiritual life led him to found and lead a monastery in his hometown. During the lengthy persecution of Christians by King Sapor, Bademus and seven of his monks were arrested and imprisoned for their unwavering faith. Despite being chained and regularly beaten, they remained steadfast in their devotion to Christ. Tragically, after enduring four months of horrifying torture, Saint Bademus met his martyrdom at the hands of Nersan, an apostate Persian prince. Seeking to prove his renunciation of Christianity, Nersan mercilessly hacked Saint Bademus to death. Despite the gruesome nature of his death, the legacy of Saint Bademus lives on through the collective memory of the Christian faithful. Although no specific representation is attributed to him, his courage and unwavering faith serve as powerful examples for believers to this day. Saint Bademus died on April 10, 376, having been clumsily beheaded. To further degrade his remains, his body was thrown to the dogs. However, his fellow Christians managed to recover his remains and secretly buried him, preserving his memory and honoring his sacrifice. Although Saint Bademus was never officially declared a patron saint, his life and martyrdom inspire many in their pursuit of holiness. His exemplary character and unwavering faith in the face of severe persecution make him a role model for all Christians. While Saint Bademus was never canonized in the formal sense of the word, his veneration and recognition as a saint predates the formal process of canonization. As a pre-congregation saint, his status as a martyr and exemplar of the faith has been acknowledged and revered by the Church for centuries. Saint Bademus is remembered and celebrated on his feast day, which falls on April 10th. On this day, believers commemorate his life, his unwavering faith, and his ultimate sacrifice for the sake of Christianity.
