Feast Day: May 20
Saint Austregisilus of Bourges, also known as Aoustrille, Austregesilio, Outril, and Outrille, was born in 551 in Bourges, France. He was educated and trained as a courtier to King Gontrano, but despite the promise of a successful worldly life, Austregisilus felt a strong calling to religious life. Prompted by this inner yearning, he decided to withdraw from the materialistic pursuits of courtly life and entered the monastic community at the Abbey of Saint-Nizier in Lyons, France. Within the walls of the abbey, Austregisilus embraced the monastic way of life, dedicated to prayer, penance, and self-denial. His piety and holiness soon caught the attention of the community, and he was chosen to serve as the abbot of his house. As an abbot, Austregisilus guided his fellow monks in their spiritual growth, fostering a climate of disciplined devotion and deep contemplation. Austregisilus's reputation for sanctity continued to spread far and wide, ultimately leading to his appointment as the bishop of Bourges in 612. Over the next twelve years, he faithfully served the people of Bourges, shepherding his flock with love, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility. During his tenure as bishop, Austregisilus actively participated in the renowned Council of Paris in 614. This council, a significant gathering of bishops and church leaders, addressed important ecclesiastical matters and sought to promote unity within the Church. Austregisilus was known to be a close friend and confidant of Saint Amand of Maastricht. In fact, the two holy men lived in close proximity for several years, with Austregisilus residing in a cell next to the cathedral of Bourges. Their companionship and shared spiritual practices undoubtedly enriched and strengthened their respective journeys of faith. Saint Austregisilus passed away on May 20, although the exact year of his death is not mentioned in historical records. His profound commitment to a life of holiness and his ceaseless dedication to the people of Bourges left a lasting impact. Though no specific representation or attribute has been assigned to Saint Austregisilus, his legacy as a faithful monastic, revered abbot, and devoted bishop endures. His canonization predates the official establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, making him a pre-congregation saint. Today, Saint Austregisilus of Bourges is venerated as the patron saint of Bourges, France. His life of self-sacrifice, spiritual leadership, and unwavering commitment to the Gospel message continue to inspire and encourage Catholics around the world.
