Biography

Saint Augustinus Yu Chinkil, also known as Augustinus Yu Jin-Gil, Augustinus Yu Chin-gil, Auguseutino, and Augustine, was a married layman catechist in the apostolic vicariate of Korea. He was born in Jo Dong, Seoul, South Korea in 1791. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he lived a devout and faithful life, committed to the teachings of the Catholic Church. In the early 19th century, Korea was largely closed off to the outside world and Catholicism was heavily persecuted by the Korean government. Saint Augustinus became aware of the Catholic faith and embraced it wholeheartedly. Inspired by his deep faith and love for God, he wrote a letter to Pope Gregory XVI, desperately requesting missionaries and priests to come to Korea to spread the Gospel and strengthen the Catholic community. Unfortunately, Saint Augustinus' efforts to bring more clergy to Korea did not go unnoticed by the authorities. He was eventually captured and imprisoned for his faith. While in prison, he was subjected to unimaginable torture and persecution. Despite the suffering he endured, Saint Augustinus remained resolute in his faith, refusing to renounce his Catholic beliefs. On September 22, 1839, Saint Augustinus Yu Chinkil was martyred for his unwavering commitment to Christ. He was beheaded in Seoul, Korea, sealing his status as a true martyr of the Catholic faith. His courageous witness and martyrdom served as an inspiration to many other Korean Catholics during a time of intense persecution. It was not until May 9, 1925, that Saint Augustinus was officially recognized for his martyrdom. Pope Pius XI declared him venerable, acknowledging his heroic sacrifice for the faith. Just two months later, on July 5, 1925, Pope Pius XI beatified Saint Augustinus, further affirming his holiness and recognizing him as a blessed in the Catholic Church. Finally, on May 6, 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Augustinus Yu Chinkil, recognizing him as a saint in the Catholic Church. His canonization served as a symbol of honor and admiration for his unwavering faith, selfless dedication, and ultimate sacrifice. Saint Augustinus Yu Chinkil remains an important figure in the history of Catholicism in Korea, and his story continues to inspire and encourage believers to this day. His life of faithfulness, even in the face of great persecution, serves as a testament to the power of God's grace and the unwavering commitment of the saints. Although not officially designated as a patron saint, Saint Augustinus is revered by Koreans and Catholics worldwide for his inspiring example of fidelity to Christ.
