He is recognized as a martyr for his unwavering faith and dedication to spreading the Gospel in Korea. Augustinus Park Chongwon was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1793. Growing up in a predominantly Confucian society, he faced many challenges in his journey of faith. However, his strong convictions led him to embrace the Catholic faith, and he became an active member of the Catholic community. As a catechist, Augustinus Park Chongwon played a crucial role in educating and catechizing new converts to the Catholic faith. During this period, Christianity faced severe persecution in Korea, as the Joseon Dynasty saw it as a foreign influence threatening their cultural traditions. Despite the risks involved, Augustinus Park Chongwon fearlessly carried out his duties as a catechist, ensuring that the faithful were properly instructed in the teachings of the Church. His dedication and passion for sharing the Gospel inspired many, as he fearlessly embraced the challenges that came with spreading the Christian message. However, in 1840, Augustinus Park Chongwon's faith and commitment to the Catholic Church led to his martyrdom. He was arrested by the local authorities, who sought to suppress the growing influence of Christianity in Korea. Following a period of imprisonment and interrogation, he was sentenced to death. On 31 January 1840, in Dangkogae, Seoul, South Korea, Augustinus Park Chongwon was beheaded for his refusal to renounce his faith. His martyrdom was a testament to his unwavering commitment to Christ and the Church, as he chose to give his life rather than betray his beliefs. Several years later, on 9 May 1925, Pope Pius XI recognized the heroic virtue and martyrdom of Augustinus Park Chongwon by decreeing him venerable. On 5 July 1925, he was beatified by the same pope, further underscoring his exemplary life of faith and sacrifice. Finally, on 6 May 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized Augustinus Park Chongwon, officially recognizing him as a saint of the Catholic Church. His canonization served as a testament to his life of sanctity and his courage in the face of persecution.
