Biography

Saint Audax of Thora, also known as Audax of Thyrum, Audax of Thurium, or Audace of Thora, is a revered saint in the Catholic Church. He was a pagan prison guard during the persecutions of Emperor Decius in the 3rd century. His encounter with Saint Anatolia, another prominent saint during that time, profoundly impacted his life and led to his conversion to Christianity. Born into a pagan family, little is known about Audax's early life or his exact birthplace. Historical records suggest that he served as a guard in a prison located in Thyrum (also known as Thyrium) or Thurium, a region associated with modern-day Southern Italy. It was during his time on duty that he had the opportunity to meet and interact with Saint Anatolia, who was imprisoned for refusing to renounce her Christian faith. Audax was deeply moved by Saint Anatolia's unwavering faith and her willingness to face martyrdom rather than renounce her beliefs. Through their conversations and witnessing her unyielding devotion, Audax became convinced of the truth of Christianity and sought her guidance in embracing the faith. Eventually, Audax made the courageous decision to convert to Christianity and abandon his former pagan beliefs. This action was not without consequences, as his newfound faith placed him in great danger amidst the ongoing persecutions. Audax, however, remained steadfast, valiantly embracing his Christian identity. The exact date of Audax's martyrdom is uncertain, but it is believed to have taken place around the year 250. He was captured and beheaded in Thora, near Lake Velino, within the diocese of Rieti, Italy. Audax's execution exemplified his unwavering commitment to his Christian faith, even in the face of death. Following his martyrdom, Audax's remains were venerated as holy relics. In the mid-10th century, his relics were moved to a revered location behind the altar in the Basilica of Sainte Scholastica in Subiaco, Italy. This act ensured that his memory and spiritual legacy would be preserved and honored by generations to come. While specific patronages associated with Saint Audax of Thora are not widely known, his life serves as a testament to the transformative power of faith and the ability for even the most unlikely individuals to undergo profound spiritual conversion. As a pre-congregation saint, Audax does not have an officially assigned feast day on the general liturgical calendar. However, some local calendars commemorate him on July 9th or July 10th, recognizing his role in the early Christian martyrology.
