Biography

Saint Athelm of Canterbury, also known as Atheim, Athelhelm, Aethelm, Aethelhelm, and Adelmus, was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church during the 9th and 10th centuries. Born in the early 9th century, Athelm was the paternal uncle of another important saint, Dunstan of Canterbury, and their lives would become interwoven in the annals of Church history. Athelm began his religious journey as a Benedictine monk at Glastonbury in England. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, a position he held until 909. During this time, Athelm's leadership skills and deep spirituality became evident to many, further solidifying his reputation within the Church. In 909, Athelm was appointed as the Bishop of Wells in Somerset, England. As bishop, he dedicated himself to the spiritual care of his diocese, working tirelessly to promote the faith and serve the needs of his flock. Athelm's compassion and wisdom gained him a great deal of respect among his fellow clergy and the people he served. In recognition of his outstanding leadership and holiness, Athelm was chosen to become the Archbishop of Canterbury in 914.
