Biography

Saint Arontius of Potenza, also known as Orontius, was a Christian martyr who lived during the reign of Emperor Maximian in the early 4th century. Born in Potenza, Italy, Arontius devoted himself to his faith from an early age, and he became a prominent figure in the local Christian community. During this period, Christians faced severe persecution and were often subjected to torture and death for refusing to renounce their faith. Arontius, being a fearless and devout believer, did not waiver in his commitment to Christ, even in the face of persecution. He continued to openly practice and preach his faith, bringing hope and inspiration to his fellow Christians. In the year 303, Emperor Maximian intensified his campaign against Christians, and Potenza became a focal point of this persecution. Arontius, along with several other devout Christians, was arrested and brought before the authorities. Despite being subjected to harsh interrogations and cruel torture, Arontius steadfastly refused to renounce his faith. Following his execution, his relics were enshrined in the Basilicata of Pontenza to honor his memory, where they continue to be venerated. The recognition of Arontius as a saint occurred before the formal establishment of canonization processes. As a result, he holds the title of a pre-congregation saint. His feast days are celebrated on August 27th and September 1st, the latter date marking his commemoration as one of the Twelve Holy Brothers.
