Biography

Saint Arnold of Hiltensweiler, also known as Arnold von Hiltensweiler, was a married layman, devoted soldier, and knight who fought in the First Crusade. Born in the 11th century in Hiltensweiler, Germany, little is known about his early life before he embarked on a life of military service. Arnold's unwavering faith and noble heart led him to actively participate in the historic First Crusade, a military campaign to recapture the Holy Land. As a gallant knight, he displayed unparalleled bravery on the battlefield, fighting alongside other Christians to reclaim Jerusalem from Muslim control. It was in these difficult and dangerous times that Arnold's deep spirituality flourished, as he sought solace and strength in his Catholic faith. Following the conclusion of the Crusade, Arnold returned to his homeland with a newfound sense of purpose. Inspired by his experiences in the Holy Land, he dedicated himself to a life of religious devotion. In approximately 1122, Arnold founded a monastery at Langnan, Germany, which became a center of spirituality and prayer. Arnold's immense love for his faith and commitment to bringing others closer to God manifested through his patronage and support of the construction of the church at Hiltensweiler. This church later became known as the Chapel of Saint Arnold, honoring his profound contributions.
