Biography

Saint Arcangelo Tadini, also known as Father Arcangelo, was born on October 12, 1846, in Verolanuova, Brescia, Italy. From a young age, he became aware of the sufferings and challenges faced by people in his community. As a youth, Arcangelo experienced an accident that resulted in a lifelong limp. However, this did not hinder his determination to serve God and his fellow human beings. At the age of 18, Arcangelo entered the seminary in Brescia and was ordained as a priest in 1870. Unfortunately, shortly after his ordination, he fell ill and had to spend his first year of priesthood with his family. Despite these initial setbacks, Arcangelo's strength and commitment to his vocation only grew. In 1871, Father Arcangelo served as a curate in the mountain village of Lodrino for two years. During this time, he developed a reputation for his deep care and attention to his parishioners. He was known for his compassionate outreach to refugees, providing them with both material and spiritual support. Father Arcangelo then became a curate at the Shrine of Santa Maria della Noce near Brescia, where he continued his dedicated service to the people. He worked diligently in this position, focusing on the spiritual needs of his parishioners and fostering a sense of community. In 1885, Father Arcangelo moved to Botticino Sera and served as a curate before eventually becoming the parish priest in 1887. He dedicated the rest of his life to revitalizing his parish and involving the parishioners in various initiatives. One of his notable achievements was the foundation of the Workers' Mutual Aid Association, a form of social insurance for the sick, injured, and aged members of the community. Displaying extraordinary generosity and foresight, Father Arcangelo used his own inheritance to establish a modern spinning factory in Botticino Sera. This factory provided employment opportunities for local women, and the profits generated were used to build a residence for them. This endeavor not only improved the economic conditions of these women but also displayed Father Arcangelo's commitment to social justice and empowering the marginalized. Furthermore, Father Arcangelo founded the Congregation of Worker Sisters of the Holy House of Nazareth. These dedicated religious sisters worked alongside other women in various factories. They not only taught the women but also led them by their own example of faith, dedication, and compassion. Throughout his life, Father Arcangelo drew immense strength from prayer, especially in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. His deep spiritual life and unwavering commitment to serving others made him a beloved figure in his community. Saint Arcangelo Tadini's holiness and selflessness were recognized by Pope John Paul II, who declared his heroic virtues on December 21, 1998. Subsequently, on October 3, 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified Father Arcangelo. Finally, on April 26, 2009, he was canonized as a saint by Pope Benedict XVI. Saint Arcangelo Tadini is venerated on May 20th. He is considered the patron saint of the Worker Sisters of the Holy House of Nazareth, a testament to his lifelong dedication to the workers and marginalized individuals he served. His life serves as a reminder of the importance of prayer, compassion, and social justice in our pursuit of holiness and service to others.
