Saint Apollinaris The Apologist, also known as Apollinaris Claudius, Apollinaris of Hierapolis, Claudius Apollinaris, and Apollinare di Gerapoli, was a second-century bishop of Hierapolis in Phrygia. He is highly regarded by other early saints, including Saint Jerome and the historian Theodoret. Born around the second century, little is known about Saint Apollinaris' early life and upbringing. However, his impact and influence on the early Christian community are well-documented. He is chiefly remembered for his defense of the Christian faith to Emperor Marcus Aurelius during a period of persecution. One of his notable contributions was writing a defense of the faith, which aimed to counter the prevailing heresies of his time. In this work, he sought to logically destroy the philosophical foundations of various heresies, effectively refuting them. Unfortunately, the majority of his writings have been lost over the centuries, leaving only fragments and references in the works of other writers. Saint Apollinaris' defense of the faith to Emperor Marcus Aurelius mentioned a miraculous victory that resulted from the prayers of Christian soldiers as evidence of the efficacy of Christian belief. He also reminded the Emperor of his promise to protect Christians, emphasizing the value of religious freedom and tolerance.
