Biography

Saint Apollinaris of Ravenna, also known as Apollinare or Apollinarus, was an esteemed figure in the early Catholic Church. Born in Antioch, Turkey, he became a devoted student of Saint Peter the Apostle and played an instrumental role in spreading Christianity. Apollinaris was the first bishop of Ravenna, Italy, and tirelessly worked to establish a strong Christian community there. However, his efforts were met with intense persecution, particularly during the reign of Emperor Vespasian. The emperor's hatred for Christians led to the exile of Apollinaris and his flock from Ravenna. During their forced departure, Apollinaris was identified as the leader of the Christian community and was subsequently arrested. He faced brutal torture and martyrdom when he was run through with a sword. Despite the obvious risks of following the path of Christ, Apollinaris remained steadfast in his faith and remained a pillar of courage and inspiration for his followers. Saint Apollinaris was renowned for his miraculous interventions and was famous as a healer. He was particularly known for healing a boy's eyes, a representation often attributed to him. Centuries after his death, he appeared in a vision to Saint Romuald, a well-known figure in Catholicism, further solidifying his status as a revered saint. The feast days of Saint Apollinaris of Ravenna are celebrated on July 20 and July 23, with the latter specifically commemorating the port of Classe in Ravenna, Italy. His relics can be found at the Benedictine abbey of Classe in Ravenna, as well as in Saint Lambert's Church in Düsseldorf, Germany. While he is not the primary patron of any specific cause, Saint Apollinaris is known to intercede against epilepsy and gout. Moreover, he is widely venerated in the Archdiocese of Ravenna-Cervia, Italy, and holds a special place in the hearts of Catholics in Germany, particularly in Aachen, Burtscheid, Düsseldorf, and Remagen.
