Feast Day: August 14
Death: August 1, 13
Saint Antony Primaldo, also known as Antonio Primaldo, was an aged lay man artisan in the town of Otranto, Italy, during the 15th century. He gained recognition for his personal piety and devoutness. However, it was during a dark and tumultuous time in Otranto's history that Antony Primaldo would leave an indelible mark. In the year 1480, Otranto fell under the invasion of the Ottoman Turks. The conquering forces presented the inhabitants of Otranto with an ultimatum: either renounce their Christian faith and convert to Islam or face death. Antony Primaldo was chosen as the spokesperson for the town and fearlessly stood before the Turks, firmly proclaiming that Otranto had chosen to remain faithful to Christ. This decisive and unwavering statement filled his fellow townsmen with courage and determination. Antony Primaldo inspired them to stay steadfast in their faith, even in the face of imminent persecution. Sadly, the Turks did not relent, and on the 13th of August 1480, Antony Primaldo, along with 812 other residents of Otranto, was martyred for their refusal to renounce Christianity. Despite the passage of time, the names of the other martyrs who stood with Antony Primaldo have been lost to history. However, their collective sacrifice and unwavering faith serve as a testament to their devotion to God and their refusal to compromise their beliefs. Centuries after their martyrdom, recognition for their sacrifice was bestowed upon Antony Primaldo and the other martyrs. On the 14th of December 1771, Pope Clement XIV beatified them, confirming their cult and acknowledging their holiness. Then, on the 6th of July 2007, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom, further affirming their sanctity and sacrifice. Finally, on Sunday, the 12th of May 2013, Pope Francis canonized Saint Antony Primaldo and the other martyrs of Otranto in a solemn ceremony held in Rome, Italy. Through their canonization, they were officially recognized as saints within the Catholic Church. Saint Antony Primaldo is venerated as the patron saint of Otranto, Italy, the very town where he fearlessly defended the faith and gave his life for Christ. His example of unwavering devotion and courage continues to inspire people today, reminding us of the importance of remaining steadfast in our own beliefs, even in the face of adversity.
