Feast Day: April 29
Death: April 1, 29
Saint Antonius Kim Songu, also known as Antonio Kim Song-u or Gim Seong-u, was a married layman catechist who lived during the 19th century in the apostolic vicariate of Korea. Born in 1795 in Gusan, Gyeonggi-do, which is in modern-day South Korea, Kim Songu dedicated his life to teaching and spreading the Catholic faith. As a catechist, Kim Songu played a crucial role in the formation and education of new Christians. He opened his home to teach them the principles of the Catholic Church, providing a safe and nurturing environment for their spiritual growth. His passion for sharing the Gospel led him to serve as a beacon of faith in his community. However, during this period, the tolerance of the Catholic faith in Korea was limited. The authorities viewed the spread of Catholicism as a threat to social and political stability. The persecution of Catholics was prevalent, and Kim Songu's dedication to his faith eventually led to his martyrdom. On April 29, 1841, Kim Songu was apprehended and imprisoned in Tangkogae, Seoul. Despite the hardships he faced in captivity, Kim Songu remained steadfast, holding onto his beliefs and refusing to renounce his faith. During his time in prison, he was tragically strangled to death, becoming a martyr for the Catholic faith. The recognition of Kim Songu's sacrifice and devotion came years after his death. On May 9, 1925, Pope Pius XI recognized his martyrdom, declaring him venerable. Two months later, on July 5, 1925, Pope Pius XI beatified Kim Songu, acknowledging his exceptional witness to Christ and the Catholic Church. Finally, on May 6, 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized Antonius Kim Songu, elevating him to the status of a saint. This act of canonization emphasized his holiness and the universal veneration he deserved within the Catholic Church. As of now, Saint Antonius Kim Songu's patronage is not specifically designated. Nevertheless, his life serves as an inspiration to all lay catechists, reminding them of the importance of selflessly teaching and sharing the Catholic faith. His feast day is celebrated on April 29th each year, commemorating his martyrdom and affirming his enduring presence in the hearts of the faithful.
