Feast Day: February 14
Saint Antoninus of Sorrento, also known as Antoninus of Campagna, Antoninus Cacciottolo, Antoninus the Abbot, and Antonino, was a Benedictine monk who lived during the 9th century. He is revered for his dedication to the monastic life and his teachings as an abbot. Saint Antoninus was born in the town of Campagna, Italy. Little is known about his early life, but he felt a deep calling to the religious life from a young age. He entered the Benedictine monastery and devoted himself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and service to God. Unfortunately, due to the turmoil of war during his lifetime, Saint Antoninus was forced to leave his monastery. Undeterred by the challenges, he became a hermit, seeking solitude and a deeper connection with God. During this time, he embraced a life of austerity, self-discipline, and prayerful reflection. Word of Saint Antoninus's holiness and wisdom spread, prompting the local community to seek him out for spiritual guidance. Recognizing his gifts as a teacher, he was invited to become the abbot at Saint Agrippinus, a monastery near Sorrento in Italy. Saint Antoninus gladly accepted the responsibility and embraced the role of a shepherd, nurturing the spiritual growth of the monks under his care. As an abbot, Saint Antoninus had a profound impact on the people of Sorrento as well. His teachings on morality, faith, and Christian living inspired many individuals to lead more virtuous lives. He emphasized the importance of humility, charity, and obedience to God's will. Saint Antoninus is often depicted in religious art as a Benedictine monk holding a standard on a city wall. This representation symbolizes his role as a spiritual guard and protector of the faith. He is recognized as a model of commitment to monastic life and a teacher to both the monastic community and the people of Sorrento. Saint Antoninus of Sorrento died peacefully in 830 of natural causes. His life of prayer, penance, and devoted service to God left a lasting impact on the communities he touched. The veneration of Saint Antoninus led to his canonization by the Catholic Church, although the exact date of his canonization is unknown as it occurred before the establishment of formal canonization processes. Today, Saint Antoninus of Sorrento is honored as the patron saint of Campagna, Italy, and Sorrento, Italy. His feast day is celebrated on February 14th, a day dedicated to remembering his saintly life and seeking his intercession in spiritual matters. His example of selflessness, piety, and dedication continues to inspire believers to deepen their faith and live a life devoted to God.
