Death: August 1, 12
Saint Antôn Nguyen Ðích, also known as Anthony Dich Nguyen, was a devout Catholic layman who lived during a time of great persecution for the Church in Vietnam. He was born around the year 1769 in Chi Long, Hanoi, Vietnam. Married and living in the apostolic vicariate of West Tonkin, Antôn Nguyen Ðích was a wealthy farmer, a solid citizen, and a devoted patron of his church. One of the notable aspects of Saint Antôn's life was his unwavering support for the missionaries of the Paris Foreign Mission Society. Not only did he offer financial assistance to these missionaries, but he also played a crucial role in protecting and hiding priests who were facing government oppression. In doing so, he risked his own safety and that of his family. Saint Antôn's courageous actions in sheltering priests resulted in his arrest and subsequent torture for his faith, his association with foreigners, and his refusal to renounce his beliefs. Notably, he provided refuge for Saint James Nam, who was arrested on his property. Despite the brutal methods employed in an attempt to make him renounce his faith, Saint Antôn Nguyen Ðích remained steadfast and resolute in his devotion to God. On 12 August 1838, he was ultimately beheaded in Bay Mau, Hanoi, Vietnam, sealing his martyrdom. Recognizing the heroic virtue and sacrifice demonstrated by Saint Antôn, Pope Leo XIII venerated him on 2 July 1899, through a decree of martyrdom. Subsequently, on 27 May 1900, Pope Leo XIII beatified him. Finally, on 19 June 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Antôn Nguyen Ðích, officially recognizing him as a saint of the Catholic Church. Throughout his life, Saint Antôn's unwavering faith, his dedication to supporting the Church, and his selfless acts of sheltering priests exemplify his commitment to the Gospel message. As one of the Martyrs of Vietnam, he serves as a powerful inspiration for all believers, reminding them of the courage and steadfastness required to remain faithful in the face of adversity. Though his representation is not explicitly mentioned, his faith and martyrdom make him a fitting intercessor for those facing persecution and those who strive to defend and protect the Church. Saint Antôn Nguyen Ðích's feast days are celebrated on 12 August and 24 November, as one of the Martyrs of Vietnam.
